The conflict check comes first.

Every appointment begins with a conflict check across parties, projects and prior instructions. Independence is established before the engagement is.

Only the parties and a reference are needed at this stage: the check is run against prior instructions and relationships, and no detail of the matter should be shared until it is complete.
